Have you ever had chickenpox? After exposure to chickenpox, the virus that caused it (varicella-zoster virus) remains in the body, residing in some nerve cells. This virus can become active again in the form of a disease called shingles which results in pain and blisters. Senior citizens are at especially high risk for developing shingles. It is important that seniors and those involved in caring for senior citizens know about shingles.

The onset of shingles is similar to chickenpox in that it produces feelings of being sick and rashes on the body or face. The main difference is when these diseases develop – that is, chickenpox mostly affects children while shingles will always occur in adults, usually after the age of 50. Shingles is somewhat rare (only occurring in 1 in 5 people). Once activated, the virus travels along the paths of the nerves to the surface of the skin producing rashes and pain.

Because shingles is caused by a virus present in the body from a previous infection of chickenpox, it is not contagious. However, you can catch the virus which will cause chickenpox in the recently infected individual. If you have never had chickenpox before, it may be best to stay away from people who develop shingles. Recently, a vaccine has been developed that can keep you from getting shingles. It is only available for senior citizens.

Risk Factors

Although there is no way to detect whether the dormant virus will become active in someone who has already recovered from chickenpox, there are certain risk factors than make activation of the virus more likely. These include:

Advanced age. This may be due to the fact that older people have a harder time of fighting off infection. The risk of shingles dramatically increases after the age of 70. Immunodifficiency – difficulty fighting off infections. If the immune system is compromised for other reasons than those due to aging, you are more likely to develop shingles. Some factors that may weaken the immune system include HIV infection, cancer, cancer treatment, organ transplants, and physical or mental stress.

Symptoms

People who develop shingles often complain of:

Burning, tingling, or numbing of the skin Feeling flu-like sickness – chills, fever, upset stomach, or headache Fluid-filled blisters Skin that is sensitive to the touch Mild itching to strong pain

There is a natural progression of the disease that proceeds in the following manner:

1. Tingling or burning of the skin occurs.

2. A few days later, a red rash is visible.

3. The rash develops into blisters that dry up and crust over within a few days.

4. The overall duration of the illness can last from 3-5 weeks.

Other complications that can result from shingles are due to blisters becoming infected and causing scarring or blindness if they develop close to the eyes. Other people experience hearing loss, brief paralysis of the face, or swelling of the brain (encephalitis).

Treatment

If you think that you might have shingles, it is important to see a doctor as soon as possible in order to treat the virus. Shingles is often treated at home with medications prescribed by your doctor. These medications can be antiviral drugs, pain relievers, or anti-depressants. If these medications are used within 72 hours of a rash developing, they can effectively shorten the duration of the illness and risk for other complications that can occur. Although most people only get shingles once, it is possible for it to recur again.

There are things that you can do to relieve the symptoms of shingles if it develops. These include:

Getting enough rest, avoiding stress, and eating right Simple exercises like stretching or walking if it is safe and not too painful Applying a cool damp washcloth to blisters Doing activities that take the mind off the pain like watching TV, reading, or Spending time with loved ones and friends Relaxation or listening to music that you enjoy Talking about your pain and emotions with others that you trust Asking for help when you need it

Some people experience ongoing pain after recovering from the virus. This pain is called post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) and usually affects the areas of the body that had rashes before. This pain has been described as sharp, throbbing, and stabbing and can interfere with daily activated for older adults who have developed shingles. Doctors can prescribe medications for the long lasting effects of PHN which older people are more at risk for.

If you’re always having trouble sleeping and end up being unproductive during the day, these facts about insomnia can give you a clearer awareness of the condition and direct you to the right insomnia treatment. If you already know some basic facts about insomnia, you may unravel some goldmine tips to conquer insomnia from this informative article.

Basic Facts About Insomnia

Simply put, insomnia is the inability to fall asleep when you want to. It is characterized by little or poor-quality sleep.

There are three types of insomnia depending on the duration of the condition: 1) Transient or short-term insomnia, as the term implies, lasts only for one night to a few weeks; 2) Intermittent insomnia is short-term but recurring; 3) Chronic insomnia is the most serious as it happens at least three times a week for a month, year, or even a lifetime.

A main effect of insomnia is excessive sleepiness, which can be accompanied with restlessness, fatigue, lethargy, and irritability, among others. It can also cause problems in concentrating and focusing. The insomniac is there but not quite there. This is most common among chronic insomnia sufferers, who may find themselves in a constant state of limbo.

Insomniacs can be also more accident-prone. The cause of one out of every five highway accidents is the driver falling asleep momentarily.

In the long term, insomnia can affect relationships at home and work, hobbies, recreational activities, and general state of mind. More than just a sleep disorder, it can greatly affect quality of life; that’s why it is vital to know the facts about insomnia.

Insomnia Causes

Sleeplessness may be caused by any or a combination of the following:

1) Diet high in stimulants. Caffeine is the main culprit. Drinking too much coffee, tea, colas and eating too much chocolate, especially in the evening, can cause problems sleeping. Alcohol is also not recommended – a nightcap may induce sleepiness at first, but prevents you from going into deep sleep, or the REM state, and thus, lets you sleep less soundly.

2) Environmental factors. Noise, light, sudden weather changes, a room that is too hot or too cold, can disturb sleep, if not delay it.

3) Change in routine. Traveling often, sleeping in an unfamiliar bed, and a job with variable schedules are examples of routine interruptions that can cause insomnia, though short-term.

4) Stress or stressful life events. Work-related problems, relationship problems, anticipation of an upcoming event like a presentation or medical exam, and sudden life events like divorce and death of a loved one are only some examples. Anxiety related to stress may very well be the number one reason why you can’t catch a wink.

5) Medical conditions. Asthma, eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia, peptic ulcer, anxiety disorders, can prevent you from falling into restful slumber.

6) Hormones. A woman suffering from menopausal symptoms like hot flushes and night sweating may have trouble sleeping. Insomnia in teenagers, meanwhile, occur mostly because of the onset of puberty, where sleeping needs and sleeping patterns usually change.

Insomnia Treatment the Natural Way

There are different insomnia treatment options, ranging from the natural insomnia herbs to the medical. Medical treatment, usually through sleeping pills, have unpleasant side effects and can ironically cause further insomnia in the long run, so therapy and natural methods are safer and more effective. Below are some examples.

1) Aromatherapy. For bouts of sleeplessness from time to time, taking a bath before going to bed using a few drops of essential oils like lavender, marjoram, or ylang-ylang can help. Or you can drop these oils directly on your pillow.

2) Flower essence therapy. White chestnut particularly helps cure insomnia gradually, usually in just a few weeks. Flower remedies can be bought in some health food stores or via mail in some websites.

3) Herbal therapy. Valerian is known as the best herbal treatment for insomnia, as it decreases nervous system activity. Use as per dosage instructions in the pack.

4) Relaxation therapy. This involves progressive muscle relaxation training, imagery training, hypnosis among others. This can be learned alone or with the help of a qualified practitioner. These techniques can relax your body and mind and make you feel drowsy and ready for bed.

5) Reconditioning. This method involves re-associating the bedroom and bed with sleep only. In applying this technique, activities like eating, reading, and watching TV cannot be done in bed. Napping for more than 30 to 45 minutes during the day is also discouraged. A fixed wake-up time is also scheduled to train the body.

Knowing these facts about insomnia, you and your loved ones can deal with the condition better should it come.

Financial abuse and material exploitation of the elderly may not cause physical injuries or leave scars, but it can have devastating effects and ruin the lives of victims. An elder’s entire life savings can disappear, leaving the victim unable to provide for his or her own needs and causing harmful stress and agitation.

Financial elder abuse and material exploitation occur when an abuser uses an elder’s money or assets in a manner contrary to elder’s wishes, needs, or best interests, or for the abuser’s personal gain. Oftentimes, elderly victims are exploited because of vulnerabilities associated with advanced age, such as impaired mental capacity. Abusers can be caregivers in nursing homes or assisted living facilities, professionals hired by the elder (such as accountants), strangers, or family members.

Financial elder abuse can take many forms. The abuser may steal money or items from the elder’s bank account or home, sell or transfer property against the elder’s wishes, use the elder’s credit cards for unauthorized purchases, use the elder’s name to open new credit accounts, or create or change a living trust or will for the abuser’s benefit. Financial elder abuse also can take the form of telemarketing fraud, identity theft, predatory lending, and home improvement and estate planning scams.

Unexplained behavioral changes, such as sudden secrecy or reluctance to speak freely, may be warning signs of financial elder abuse. If an elder appears withdrawn, helpless, frightened, or angry, this may also indicate that abuse is taking place. Some of the warning signs of financial elder abuse can be explained by other causes, and no single indicator can be taken as decisive proof. However, a pattern of multiple warning signs may suggest that a problem is present.

The following are warning signs of financial elder abuse:
Unusual bank account activity, such as ATM withdrawals at a bank the elder cannot travel to Signatures on checks and documents that do not match the elder’s signature Checks or documents signed despite the fact elder cannot write or understand what he/she is signing Unexplained change in spending patterns or unusual/out of character purchases Unusual medical charges or nursing home charges Generous gifts to a person the elder has only met recently Change in lawyer or bank for unknown reason Change in who has power of attorney for unknown reason Stranger who initiates close relationship with elder and offers to manage finances and assets
Factors which make elders susceptible to financial abuse include isolation, loneliness, physical and/or mental disabilities, and lack of familiarity with financial issues. Elder financial exploitation often goes unreported. The senior may be unaware that exploitation is taking place or feels afraid of the abuser. The elder victim may also be embarrassed or worried about being labeled senile or too demanding. If you suspect that an elderly loved is a victim of financial abuse, it is important to take action. Reporting financial elder abuse can save the assets, dignity, and health of an elder. Contacting law enforcement officials and an elder law attorney are two of the first steps that should be taken.

The AARP, American Association of Retired Persons, ( http://www.aarp.org/ ) conducted a survey in 2000 entitled, “Consumer Understanding of pricing Practices and Savings Opportunities in Long Distance Telephone Industry.” This report was an update of an earlier survey conducted in 1998. As the title implies, the survey examines the pricing issues surrounding long distance calling plans in the market and the public’s awareness, with a particular focus on people over 50, of these types of savings plans. Only one-quarter of those interviewed 65 and older, looked for long distance calling plans that would save them money. More alarming was the fact that only a little more than 40% knew that the best rate was not the standard rate. To read the complete report, click here. ( http://research.aarp.org/consume/d17192_longdis.pdf )

Since deregulation, there are literally dozens, if not hundreds, of calling plans available in the market today. This has been a windfall for consumers but unfortunately all of the various plans and options can become very confusing for most consumers – particularly our elderly who grew up during the AT&T only reign. Please read on if you or one of your family members fall into this category. We offer these tips to help cut through some of the confusion and ease the burden (pain) of selecting a calling plan that will save them considerable sums over time.

• Telemarketing Issues:

Telemarketers and receiving spam email are one in the same, as far as I am concerned. With unwanted email you can hit the delete key; with telemarketers simply hang up. Besides, selecting a calling plan should be done with full knowledge and disclosure and reading the fine print. You cannot do that over the phone and you can rest assured that the telemarketer is not going to be terrible forthcoming. As the drug commercials say, just say no – then hang up.

• Peak versus Off-Peak Rates:

You need to look for a calling plan that delivers the same low price, any time and all of the time. Although there are numerous plans out there that offer different rates for different times and weekends, they have the tendency to mystify and bewilder mere mortals such as you and me.

• First Steps:

Start with people you know and trust; family members, close neighbors and business associates if appropriate. Ask who they use and why; what their rates are and if there are any limitations. Check with them on whether there are monthly fees and minimums with their calling plan and most important, whether they are satisfied with their service and would recommend their carrier to others. Answers to these types of questions will get you pointed in the right direction at least. Also, if you hear the same company recommended by more than one friend then you need to look into their plans first.

• Primary Considerations:

Unfortunately, getting the right calling plan requires a little work on your part. You need to study your telephone calling behavior, check for patterns, times, particular cities that you call more frequently and so forth. Do you make most of your calls locally, within the State or State-to-State? Are you a large consumer of International calls? Once you understand your personal calling habits and patterns you can begin to focus your attention on which carrier will best meet those need and meet your expectations with the most competitive price. Match your calling pattern with the recommendations you received from others in the first step above. Is there a good fit? If so, pursue them further.

• Monthly Fees:

There are many calling plans available in the marketplace that does not force you to pay a monthly fee. Avoid monthly fees if at all possible. Even more so if you do not make many calls. One more word of caution, do not buy in to the hype about low state-to-state rates because in some cases, lurking in the fine print may be a monthly fee. It’s like spotting an attractive lady across a dimly lit room, once the makeup and wig comes off you discover the true ugliness lurking beneath.

• Leasing versus Owning the Phone:

There is no reason today to lease a telephone from your local carrier. Check your telephone bill and see if there is a line item for leased equipment. If there is, head down to your local retailer that sells telephones and pick up a phone that suits your needs. Chances are you will be able to purchase a telephone with more features and at a cost that will save you a tidy sum every year. There are many retailers that sell phones for well under $100 with some below $50. There are many telephone carriers that charge leasing fees up to $20.00 per month or $240 per year. Today that is just a waste of money.

• Cramming:

Get into the habit of reviewing your telephone bill every month. Although reputable telephone carriers do not indulge in the spurious practice of cramming, they do occasionally make a mistake. Cramming is the practice of placing additional charges for goods and services on your telephone bill that you did not authorize or purchase. It is illegal. In the case of a mistakes or suspected cramming, you need to contact the company and ask them, politely initially, to explain the charges. If you didn’t authorize the purchase then ask your carrier to remove it from your bill. If they fail to remove the charge from your bill, and you feel that the charge is wrong, then contact your local office of

Public Utilities or go to the FCC web site and file a complaint.

• Added Features:

There are many fine features that can be added to your telephone service to enhance its functions and permit a broader range of useful information. But if you are like me, and could care less about the fancy bells and whistles, remove those services that you really don’t need or want. Unfortunately, there are many seniors that are sold a package of goods and services when they sign up for a new service or when telemarketers call with the latest gizmo. If you don’t need it, don’t get it. If you have it and don’t use it, remove it. All of these little “extras” increase your bill and could be a waste of money.

• Saving on Calling Plans with Fixed or Low Income:

The Federal Government is committed to providing telephone service to all Americans. The Federal Universal Service Fund includes the low-income program; which provides discounts on telephone installation and basic monthly service to qualifying consumers. There are two components to the low income program, Lifeline Assistance (“Lifeline”) and Link-Up America (“Link-Up”). Lifeline and Link-Up are available to all qualifying low-income consumers nationwide. The FCC’s enhanced Lifeline and Link-UP programs, however, which offer additional discounts, are available only for qualifying consumers living on Tribal Lands. Check with your local provider and ask about these programs in order to earn discounts on the basic telephone service. For more information about these low income programs click here. ( http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/tribalfactsheet.pdf )

• Changing Long Distance Carriers too Much Trouble:

Many people feel that switching carriers is just too much trouble and a bit too confusing. They are probably right. But in any event, if you decide to keep your existing carrier then at least check with them to make sure you are getting the best value for your money and the cheapest rates they offer. Do some of the other tips we suggest here, such as getting rid of leased equipment and extra features and you will be able to trim your bill substantially.

Senior Citizens Health Conditions

without comments

Ian Pennington asked:

As we reach our later years we are at risk of a great many health concerns. The list of senior citizens health conditions is a long and complex one. It includes both mental and physical issues and some people will be plagued with both.

It can only be expected that, as time takes it toll on our bodies, we will experience some deterioration in our physical and mental wellbeing. That is not to say that once we have retired we are on the scrap heap and just waiting until our lives are over. Far from it. There has been a huge amount of medical research taking place over the last century, and indeed much longer, and this has paved the way for a greater understanding of the aging process. We are now much more educated regarding nutrition and health matters and are able to control and sometimes eliminate many of the senior citizens health conditions.

One of the main fears that the elderly face is that of dementia of one form or another. The most commonly known is Alzheimer’s Disease but there are others. This affects the patients mind and can be the cause of heartache for a caring partner who will feel unable to help. They will find that they spend much of their time caring for the patient whilst at the same time having to accept the fact that they are becoming more distant as the disease progresses. This can be aggravated if the carer is also suffering from any one of the other senior citizens health conditions, either physically or mentally.

Other serious conditions can often include strokes. Post stroke problems can vary hugely depending on the severity of the attack and the level of recovery of the patient. Sometimes a stroke can result in partial paralysis. This obviously has a far reaching affect on the elderly and may jeopardise their ability to get out and visit family and friends. Even the most simple tasks, which were taken for granted previously, may now cause a problem; shopping, housework etc. Strokes are high on the list of senior citizens health conditions, but, they are also the subject of a lot of research and our understanding of the subject is increasing all the time. Post stroke care has improved a great deal and in some cases patients now recover fully.

Heart disease has been an increasing problem in all age groups, but continues to be a main factor in contributing to senior citizens health conditions. Once again, however, research is good on the subject and our knowledge increasing all the time. Surgical options are becoming more common and our expertise in the field has contributed to many lives being extended.

There are a number of senior citizens health conditions which can be helped by a careful diet being followed during our earlier years. Osteoporosis, rheumatism and arthritis have all been the subject of studies and tests. Some foods have been found to be a great help in reducing the chances of becoming a sufferer.

Don’t wait until it is too late. There has been so much research undertaken on the subject of senior citizens health conditions that you would be wise to take action early and follow the advice that is available so that you can increase your chances of enjoying your later years in the best possible health.

Does Melatonin Help With Insomnia?

without comments

Jeff Farley asked:

Should you take melatonin to get rid of insomnia? First off, let’s look at what melatonin is. Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone found in just about all living things, including human beings. It is also found in other living organisms such as algae.

Melatonin is a more beneficial supplement than other types of sleeping aids, because as we mentioned earlier, it is natural. Also, melatonin does not carry as many risks for addiction that sleeping pills do. However, this does not give you carte blanche to use it every night. While I recommend that you never use sleeping pills to conquer insomnia, I think occasional use of melatonin is fine. But if you use melatonin too much, your body will build a tolerance to it, and then you will have to use it to get to sleep. Also, if you have extreme insomnia where you are unable to get much sleep night after night, melatonin may not help you all that much, since it is not really all that strong.

If you are suffering from insomnia and are considering using melatonin, you should try to incorporate some other habits into your lifestyle to battle insomnia. A lack of sleep can be brought on by a number of factors, not just those related to your health. If you often go to sleep at random times, this could definitely trigger insomnia. Try to keep a consistent sleep schedule. If you are consuming caffeine or alcohol shortly before bed, and have trouble sleeping, eliminate using these products. These are just a couple of things you can do in addition to taking melatonin to get rid of insomnia.

Do you have trouble sleeping night after night? Perhaps you snore at night and this wakes you up time after time. Is your significant other getting upset having to wake up with you? If you would like to cure the insomnia problem that you have now, here are a few tips and potential causes for this sleep debilitating problem.

The first thing you need to consider is when did it start. Have you had anything dramatic occurred to you in the last several days? If so, this can cause sleeplessness to arise because your emotions are off balance causing you to have a bout with insomnia. Once you have determined when it started, should consider a few other things.

The second thing to consider are any recent illnesses that you may have gotten. Perhaps you have the flu and you are now recovering from it. Many people sleep too much while they are sick allowing their bodies to recuperate from the disease. However, after doing so, their body does not need as much sleep and therefore insomnia may arise.

The third thing you also need to consider your age. The older you get, the less sleep you actually need. This is a proven medical fact. This could be because you are doing less than he did when you were younger or employed at a job prior to retirement.

Fourth, you need to look at the types of foods and drinks that you ingest can also cause sleepless nights. If you are a large coffee drinker, and you drink too much until the wee hours of the night, there is a large probability but that is your problem. Also, eating things they give you indigestion may cause your stomach to be upset which would not allow you to have a restful sleep.

Finally, have you had any major schedule change? Perhaps your shift at work has moved you from the day shift to the night shift. This would cause such a disturbance in your regular sleeping pattern that you would probably not be able to sleep on a regular basis for several weeks until you acclimated to the new pattern.

There are many reasons that you may be suffering from insomnia. Most people simply do not take the time to consider all of the possibilities. They go straight to the doctor or start popping the necessary pills in order to induce a semi-restful sleep.

Your best bet is to evaluate what is going on in your life, shut down anything that is negative including bad eating habits, and then reassess how you were sleeping in several days and see if the events in your life had anything to do with your inability to sleep.

Healthy Eating For Senior Citizens

without comments

Ian Pennington asked:

All too often we resort to medication to help with our medical problems when a change in our diet could be all that was needed. As we grow older our diet becomes more and more important and healthy eating for senior citizens can improve their quality of life considerably.

In an ideal world, we would be following a healthy diet throughout our lives and our medical problems later in life would be negligible. This, however, is unlikely to be the case and there will not doubt be a range of conditions appearing as we get older. One of these is likely to be osteoporosis. This is a condition which will weaken the bones and can lead to an increased risk of fractures. A plan for healthy eating for senior citizens who have, or are at risk of getting osteoporosis would include a possible reduction in protein. We are not saying that you should discard it from your diet, just do not eat too much. Your body uses acid in the digestion of protein and if there is too much you may need to counterbalance this by taking calcium from your bones.

Other conditions that the elderly are prone to include rheumatoid arthritis. There are many debates regarding the affect of certain foods on rheumatoid arthritis and healthy eating for senior citizens who suffer with the condition. Some claims have been subject to research and others are still just a case of hearsay. It is very difficult to say if there is any link between diet and the condition and many studies are underway.

The best advice that can be given regarding healthy eating for senior citizens is to eat a good, balanced diet with plenty of fresh foods. Do not eat too much protein and try and reduce red meats a little. Calcium is great for the strengthening of bones but do consider the fact that this is protein and bear in mind what we said earlier.

Often, as you get older, you find that your appetite is not as great as it was when you were younger. You may find it easier to digest more, smaller meals rather than one or two larger ones. Sometimes you may feel lethargic about preparing a meal. If this is the case try to eat something which does not require much time and effort. This does not mean that it has to be lacking in nutritional value. Even a bowl of cereals can be very healthy and satisfying and will make you feel better in the short term. In the long term, however, you would be wise to make the effort to produce a good hot, nutritious meal for yourself and your family. Healthy eating for senior citizens is by far the best way to ensure you keep your energy levels high. This way you will be able to enjoy your leisure time and fight infections and ill health.
