Ian Pennington asked:

As we reach our later years we are at risk of a great many health concerns. The list of senior citizens health conditions is a long and complex one. It includes both mental and physical issues and some people will be plagued with both.

It can only be expected that, as time takes it toll on our bodies, we will experience some deterioration in our physical and mental wellbeing. That is not to say that once we have retired we are on the scrap heap and just waiting until our lives are over. Far from it. There has been a huge amount of medical research taking place over the last century, and indeed much longer, and this has paved the way for a greater understanding of the aging process. We are now much more educated regarding nutrition and health matters and are able to control and sometimes eliminate many of the senior citizens health conditions.

One of the main fears that the elderly face is that of dementia of one form or another. The most commonly known is Alzheimer’s Disease but there are others. This affects the patients mind and can be the cause of heartache for a caring partner who will feel unable to help. They will find that they spend much of their time caring for the patient whilst at the same time having to accept the fact that they are becoming more distant as the disease progresses. This can be aggravated if the carer is also suffering from any one of the other senior citizens health conditions, either physically or mentally.

Other serious conditions can often include strokes. Post stroke problems can vary hugely depending on the severity of the attack and the level of recovery of the patient. Sometimes a stroke can result in partial paralysis. This obviously has a far reaching affect on the elderly and may jeopardise their ability to get out and visit family and friends. Even the most simple tasks, which were taken for granted previously, may now cause a problem; shopping, housework etc. Strokes are high on the list of senior citizens health conditions, but, they are also the subject of a lot of research and our understanding of the subject is increasing all the time. Post stroke care has improved a great deal and in some cases patients now recover fully.

Heart disease has been an increasing problem in all age groups, but continues to be a main factor in contributing to senior citizens health conditions. Once again, however, research is good on the subject and our knowledge increasing all the time. Surgical options are becoming more common and our expertise in the field has contributed to many lives being extended.

There are a number of senior citizens health conditions which can be helped by a careful diet being followed during our earlier years. Osteoporosis, rheumatism and arthritis have all been the subject of studies and tests. Some foods have been found to be a great help in reducing the chances of becoming a sufferer.

Don’t wait until it is too late. There has been so much research undertaken on the subject of senior citizens health conditions that you would be wise to take action early and follow the advice that is available so that you can increase your chances of enjoying your later years in the best possible health.

Jeff Farley asked:

Should you take melatonin to get rid of insomnia? First off, let’s look at what melatonin is. Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone found in just about all living things, including human beings. It is also found in other living organisms such as algae.

Melatonin is a more beneficial supplement than other types of sleeping aids, because as we mentioned earlier, it is natural. Also, melatonin does not carry as many risks for addiction that sleeping pills do. However, this does not give you carte blanche to use it every night. While I recommend that you never use sleeping pills to conquer insomnia, I think occasional use of melatonin is fine. But if you use melatonin too much, your body will build a tolerance to it, and then you will have to use it to get to sleep. Also, if you have extreme insomnia where you are unable to get much sleep night after night, melatonin may not help you all that much, since it is not really all that strong.

If you are suffering from insomnia and are considering using melatonin, you should try to incorporate some other habits into your lifestyle to battle insomnia. A lack of sleep can be brought on by a number of factors, not just those related to your health. If you often go to sleep at random times, this could definitely trigger insomnia. Try to keep a consistent sleep schedule. If you are consuming caffeine or alcohol shortly before bed, and have trouble sleeping, eliminate using these products. These are just a couple of things you can do in addition to taking melatonin to get rid of insomnia.

Do you have trouble sleeping night after night? Perhaps you snore at night and this wakes you up time after time. Is your significant other getting upset having to wake up with you? If you would like to cure the insomnia problem that you have now, here are a few tips and potential causes for this sleep debilitating problem. The first thing you need to consider is when did it start. Have you had anything dramatic occurred to you in the last several days? If so, this can cause sleeplessness to arise because your emotions are off balance causing you to have a bout with insomnia. Once you have determined when it started, should consider a few other things. The second thing to consider are any recent illnesses that you may have gotten. Perhaps you have the flu and you are now recovering from it. Many people sleep too much while they are sick allowing their bodies to recuperate from the disease. However, after doing so, their body does not need as much sleep and therefore insomnia may arise. The third thing you also need to consider your age. The older you get, the less sleep you actually need. This is a proven medical fact. This could be because you are doing less than he did when you were younger or employed at a job prior to retirement.Fourth, you need to look at the types of foods and drinks that you ingest can also cause sleepless nights. If you are a large coffee drinker, and you drink too much until the wee hours of the night, there is a large probability but that is your problem. Also, eating things they give you indigestion may cause your stomach to be upset which would not allow you to have a restful sleep. Finally, have you had any major schedule change? Perhaps your shift at work has moved you from the day shift to the night shift. This would cause such a disturbance in your regular sleeping pattern that you would probably not be able to sleep on a regular basis for several weeks until you acclimated to the new pattern. There are many reasons that you may be suffering from insomnia. Most people simply do not take the time to consider all of the possibilities. They go straight to the doctor or start popping the necessary pills in order to induce a semi-restful sleep.Your best bet is to evaluate what is going on in your life, shut down anything that is negative including bad eating habits, and then reassess how you were sleeping in several days and see if the events in your life had anything to do with your inability to sleep.

Ian Pennington asked:

All too often we resort to medication to help with our medical problems when a change in our diet could be all that was needed. As we grow older our diet becomes more and more important and healthy eating for senior citizens can improve their quality of life considerably.

In an ideal world, we would be following a healthy diet throughout our lives and our medical problems later in life would be negligible. This, however, is unlikely to be the case and there will not doubt be a range of conditions appearing as we get older. One of these is likely to be osteoporosis. This is a condition which will weaken the bones and can lead to an increased risk of fractures. A plan for healthy eating for senior citizens who have, or are at risk of getting osteoporosis would include a possible reduction in protein. We are not saying that you should discard it from your diet, just do not eat too much. Your body uses acid in the digestion of protein and if there is too much you may need to counterbalance this by taking calcium from your bones.

Other conditions that the elderly are prone to include rheumatoid arthritis. There are many debates regarding the affect of certain foods on rheumatoid arthritis and healthy eating for senior citizens who suffer with the condition. Some claims have been subject to research and others are still just a case of hearsay. It is very difficult to say if there is any link between diet and the condition and many studies are underway.

The best advice that can be given regarding healthy eating for senior citizens is to eat a good, balanced diet with plenty of fresh foods. Do not eat too much protein and try and reduce red meats a little. Calcium is great for the strengthening of bones but do consider the fact that this is protein and bear in mind what we said earlier.

Often, as you get older, you find that your appetite is not as great as it was when you were younger. You may find it easier to digest more, smaller meals rather than one or two larger ones. Sometimes you may feel lethargic about preparing a meal. If this is the case try to eat something which does not require much time and effort. This does not mean that it has to be lacking in nutritional value. Even a bowl of cereals can be very healthy and satisfying and will make you feel better in the short term. In the long term, however, you would be wise to make the effort to produce a good hot, nutritious meal for yourself and your family. Healthy eating for senior citizens is by far the best way to ensure you keep your energy levels high. This way you will be able to enjoy your leisure time and fight infections and ill health.

Marte Cliff asked:

Senior citizens selling homes are generally at a crossroads in life, and when you recognize and appreciate the feelings associated with that crossroads you’ll go far in creating a loyal client.

In general, seniors have four reasons for selling their homes:
Retirement offers the opportunity for a new adventure. They miss their kids and want to move to be near them. They are no longer willing to care for a house and yard and are moving to a retirement community. They are no longer able to live alone and are moving to a care facility.

In the first three instances, the move is probably a happy event. While they will experience some nostalgic moments if they’ve raised their children in that house, or even been there for 20 years, they’re still in happy anticipation of the future.

You can empathize with them over needing to part with the symbols of happy memories, and you should. When you recognize and validate a person’s inner conflicts, you make them feel better. And you should always strive to make your clients feel good.

The fourth reason isn’t so happy, so the best you can do is listen. Sometimes people need to talk, so let them.

Meanwhile – selling a home for someone who hasn’t sold a home in many years means you need to take your time. Sometimes agents come across as condescending – even to the point of acting as if the seniors were somehow deficient in intelligence. Don’t do that.

Simply recognize that things have changed drastically – even over the past 20 years. Handshakes and verbal promises used to hold some weight. Most seniors wish they still did.

You should be explaining all the forms to every seller, but it is imperative that you do so with seniors. After all, they’ve been around long enough to be a little leery of signing anything if they don’t know what it says and does. So ask if they’re familiar with the forms, and if they say no, take the time to go over each of them.

Tell them why the disclosure forms are so important and impress the safety of accuracy. Warn them that you will need such things as permit documents and proof of septic pumping or furnace maintenance, so they can dig through old files and be ready when you need them. Give them a checklist of all the documents you’ll need.

After that, give them fair warning about all the steps that take place after you bring them an acceptable offer. They might not realize that until all the inspections are done and contingencies removed, a deal is not a deal. Warn them that the buyer might come back and try to re-negotiate based on the results of a home inspection.

Once you have the listing signed, impress upon them the importance of getting out of the house when buyer prospects arrive. Depending upon their personality, it is sometimes far too easy for buyers or their agents to get them into conversations that reveal too much – and thus destroy their negotiating position.

Which brings up another point – if you’re selling for someone who is moving to a care facility, don’t tell the other agents. And do remind your seller not to tell them either. The reason for the move is not their business and will damage your seller in negotiations.

Trust is an issue with every seller, but especially so with seniors. So when you’re meeting them for the first time to try to get their listing, don’t push. Let them get acquainted with you and don’t use the assumptive approach. Ask for the listing, show them why you’ll market their home and give them better service than any other agent, but don’t shove a listing agreement under their noses until they’re ready.

And whatever you do, don’t be condescending. Unless they give you permission, donot presume that it’s OK to call a senior citizen by his or her first name. Say Mr. or Mrs. or Ms until you’re told differently. And if you’re talking to a very elderly person, resist the temptation to call them “Honey.” There are a few who will like it – but most will be very anxious to show you to the door – permanently.

Lastly, never discount the value of their possessions. Don’t suggest a yard sale unless they do. Remember that much of what they own may look like junk to you, but it holds memories for them. Be respectful.

As with selling to senior citizens, selling for senior citizens is not really that different – if you’re doing your job well with all clients.

Remember to listen well, be respectful, and keep your client’s best interests foremost in your mind.

Each year, one in three people over the age of sixty-five will experience a fall. This is an eye-opening statistic for many. The question is, are you doing anything to prevent falls? If not, you should. Here are four things you can do now to help reduce your chances of falling.

Step One: Visit Your Doctor

You should see your doctor if you haven’t recently and have him check your medications. Some medications for blood pressure, depression, and allergies can affect your balance.

If you have noticed a steep drop-off in your stability, your doctor may want to screen for any of a number of diseases that can affect balance. You should also have your eyes and ears checked since they both play a big role in maintaining equilibrium.

Step Two: Fall-proof Your Home

Take a tour of your house and look for anything that could cause you to trip. Area rugs and electric cords are notorious tripping hazards. You can also consider plugging in a night-light in the hallway and the bathroom so you don’t stumble on your way to the bathroom during the night. Also, make sure the railings along the stairs are strong enough to support your weight when you lean on them.

Step Three: Train Your Balance

Many seniors know that you can train your heart and muscles, but few are aware that you can also train your balance. A balance exercise involves putting your body into a slightly unstable position. This can include standing with one foot in front of the other like you’re on a balance beam, or standing on one foot. Just place your feet in the correct position and try to hold it there for ten to twenty seconds.

You should always do balance exercises next to something that you can hold on to if you need it, like a sturdy doorknob or the back of a couch. Balance exercises can be done daily.

Step Four: Strengthen Your Legs

In addition to making daily life a lot easier, strong legs can also help catch you if you trip. The easiest thing to do to strengthen your legs is to use them more. Walk around the block. Take the stairs. Practice standing up and sitting down from a chair. Work in your yard. Anything that uses your legs will help them get a little stronger.

This multi-pronged approach can greatly reduce your chances of falling. So go schedule your next check-up, examine your home for tripping hazards, and start doing exercises for balance and leg strength.

By: Mike D.

Antoinette Boulay asked:

The term daycare conjures up visions of toys, playpens and nap time in settings offered for kids. Be it an infant daycare, older kids daycares where working parents drop children off in the morning, or after school care centers keeping school-age kids busy working on assignments until parents can come pick them up, this kind of setting is familiar to most parents everyone.

But there is another kind of daycare, one geared to a more elderly population. Respite care makes available daycare for seniors; these options reverse the trend of handing elderly patients over to the care of nursing homes.

Typical working families have no space or time available to let them care full time for a senior in need of aid. Now that the population as a group is living longer and this is prone to incapacitating diseases, including different forms of dementia, respite care gives sorely needed support.

Adult daycare is a temporary respite care service that replaces the family care when it’s members are not available. Generally given in a nursing home or designated adult daycare center, elderly may take creative classes, be present at social activities, or enjoy movies and other activities. More importantly, trained professionals provide supervision and care along with medical intervention if required. Staff maintains working relationships with clinics or hospitals and can take part in individual care.

This simple form of respite care is making it feasible for elderly people to stay in their homes and stay out of full time nursing homes. Diverse models of adult daycare comprise the respite care system:

One kind of adult day healthcare setting has a lower caregiver to patient proportion; these are generally reserved for seniors suffering from dementia. Caregivers are specifically trained in handling these patients and associated problems. It is a good pick for the person needing specialized care due to illness.

The other kind of adult day is caters to those not suffering from dementia, but have other illnesses which requires specific treatment, meals, and medication administration.
